Member Spotlight - Dennis Ryerson
Wouldn’t it be so exciting to have up to the minute local and global news at your finger tips - from an insider? Dennis Ryerson, is what one would call a lucky man with a fun job. I call him the hardest working man in Indianapolis who doesn’t just have a job, he has a way of life.
Dedicated to providing an unbiased voice for the community, he is up at the crack of dawn and goes to bed sometime near midnight after editing the news for the next day. He lives and breathes his work and that is why he has had such an amazing career.
As a young boy, he grew up on an Iowa farm and found he had a fondness for reading the newspaper and being current on the latest information. College presented interesting opportunities as he majored in radio and TV. While working in radio, he began filling in as the news director and as some say, the rest is history. His passion exploded into his lifelong journey across the United States providing news, communities could sink their teeth in to. From Iowa, where he worked at the local paper covering night cops, he moved to Colorado, Washington, Ohio, California, Montana, Nebraska and finally, Indianapolis where he has been for the last 6 years.
Dennis Ryerson not only manages our Indy Star and his 200 staff members, he over sees three web sites, IndyStar.com, Indy.com and Momslikeme.com. His work is more than four people could do in a lifetime and he manages to make the most of everyday. Dennis Ryerson has a fair and just mind and a thoughtful outlook on the local community and the world.
Reporting on the real news that effects change and advocating for those who don’t have advocates is Ryerson’s number one goal. It seems to have worked well for him. When the Star began reporting on the child abuse ravaging our community, they caught the eye of Governor Daniels who made child protection a priority and won the State of Indiana an award for such a successful turn around.
Don’t be fooled, Dennis Ryerson is not all work and no play. He loves to cook, hike and visit his grandson in Denver, not to mention the amazing sailing trips he takes in the Caribbean. Indianapolis is so lucky to have such caring talent that has 82% of adults reading his paper 5.2 times a week.
